Rachel Alexandra models for Vogue

May 29, 2009

Rachel Alexandra, the gorgeous filly that won this year’s Kentucky Oaks and the Preakness has made the fashion big time.

Star fashion photographer Steven Klein, known for his gritty yet glamorous shots of everyone from Madonna to Justin Timberlake, was in Louisville Friday, May 29, to shoot images of the elegant equine for the August issue of Vogue.

According to a release from Churchill, Klein and his crew set up a backdrop between Barns 36 and 38
and apparently, the calm-as-a-cucumber Thoroughbred had to be awakened in her stall before the big shoot. Onlookers included Barbara Banke, wife of Stonestreet Stables’ Jess Jackson, the filly’s majority owner.

Seems that legendary Vogue editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour, attended this year’s Preakness and, “She was there at the Preakness and was inspired, like so many other women were,” said Carolina Shaw, a spokesperson for Jackson Family Enterprises.

I sure hope they got to photograph her with her beautiful mane and forelock down, as it should be. I don’t know why the Jess Jackson’s think this tight, wadding of their horses manes look good, and the tight thin forlock, but it sure takes away from the majestic horses’ natural beauty! Why do they do this? Leave her alone, let her natural beauty show itself to the world! They did the same damned thing to the gorgeous Curlin, and when you look at a picture of him when he’s not all braided and knotted up, his mane and forelock flowing, he is just gorgeous. Give it a rest, Jacksons!

Harriett HendrenWhile I grew up in small-town Kentucky I’ve always been fascinated with the cosmopolitan world of high fashion. On the other hand, I love a bargain and the thrill of shopping for just the right piece. I have a degree in English from the University of Kentucky, and since 2002 I’ve written a column for the Lexington Herald-Leader about shopping, beauty and fashion. During that time I’ve interviewed everyone from designers to boutique owners about trends and style. And I’m still forever searching for the next big sale.
