Puttin’ on a Ritts exhibit

November 2, 2012

Herb Ritts: L.A. Style, now showing at the Cincinnati Art Museum, features the works of one of the top fashion photographers of the ’80s.
Ritts, who died in 2002, is known for his portraits of celebrities including Richard Gere and Madonna as well as athletes, dancers and fashion models. For his unique style, the artist was fond of using the bright California sunlight and outdoor locations to produce bold contrasts.
The exhibit, organized by the J. Paul Getty Museum, is on view through Dec. 30 and includes a selection of famous images and previously unpublished photographs as well as Ritts’ work in music and fashion videos.

The Herb Ritts photo of Cindy Crawford (above), taken in Malibu in 1993, is part of the Ritts exhibit at Cincinnati Art Museum. The photo is courtesy of the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, Gift of Herb Ritts Foundation.

Harriett HendrenWhile I grew up in small-town Kentucky I’ve always been fascinated with the cosmopolitan world of high fashion. On the other hand, I love a bargain and the thrill of shopping for just the right piece. I have a degree in English from the University of Kentucky, and since 2002 I’ve written a column for the Lexington Herald-Leader about shopping, beauty and fashion. During that time I’ve interviewed everyone from designers to boutique owners about trends and style. And I’m still forever searching for the next big sale.
