Wearing and caring for Haiti

What you wear does matter. Especially with one of the Haiti relief shirts available online and in stores.
Well-known designers and local names are doing their part by offering customers a chance to donate and to wear unique designs.
We’ve assembled a selection of several shirts; most are $12 and less. Proceeds from all of these items will go to Haitian relief funds.
Hands-On Originals, Child Care Council of Kentucky and Kids Matter: These three groups have teamed up to offer the “Have a Heart, Lend a Hand” shirt. For every shirt purchased, a shirt will be provided for a child in Haiti. Also, 100 percent of the proceeds will go to American Red Cross. The shirts are $12 and will be available next week (hopefully by Wednesday) at the Child Care Council and Kids Matter office at 1460 Newtown Pike or www.childcarecouncilofky.com. Read more about this project in Merlene Davis’ column at Kentucky.com.
Cat Fan-Attic: Sales of Hoops for Haiti shirts soared after University of Kentucky basketball players sported them during the telethon on Jan. 17. Shirts are $10, and 100 percent of the net profit will go to Haiti relief. They’re available at Cat Fan-Attic, 1975 Harrodsburg Road, or www.catfanattic.com.
Ralph Lauren: At $98, the Haiti relief polo from Ralph Lauren is by far the priciest shirt of the lot. But the company promises that 100 percent of the proceeds will go to the United Way Worldwide Disaster Fund. The classic Ralph Lauren pony is embroidered on the left front, a Haiti Relief emblem on the right. “Ralph Lauren” and “United Way” are on the back. There is a classic-fit style as well as a skinny fit. Available only at www.ralphlauren.com.
Threadless: This online retailer offers loads of original designs, including one for Haitian relief. Inspired by Haitian street art and created by two designers from the Dominican Republic, the shirt reads, “Men anpil chay pa lou,” which translated into English means, “Many Hands Make the Load Lighter.” Shirts are $10, and proceeds go to the American Red Cross Haiti Relief and Development Fund. Available at
www.threadless.com.

Harriett HendrenWhile I grew up in small-town Kentucky I’ve always been fascinated with the cosmopolitan world of high fashion. On the other hand, I love a bargain and the thrill of shopping for just the right piece. I have a degree in English from the University of Kentucky, and since 2002 I’ve written a column for the Lexington Herald-Leader about shopping, beauty and fashion. During that time I’ve interviewed everyone from designers to boutique owners about trends and style. And I’m still forever searching for the next big sale.
