Celebrate with Skirt on Friday
Skirt magazine will host a Fashion Challenge Gallery Hop & Shop 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Fayette Mall featuring shopping specials at mall stores, Skirt swag bags, refreshments, and styles from the magazine’s Fashion Challenge Contest.
Starting last April, Skirt, which is published partly by the Herald-Leader, asked readers to create clothes and accessories from the pages of Skirt! and the Herald-Leader.
Friday, you’ll see the amazing entries: hats, jewelry, swimsuits, dresses and, of course, skirts, modeled by dancers of the Kentucky Ballet Theatre. A grand prize winner will be announced, and a portion of the contest’s entry fees will be presented to the Ball-Quantrell Jones Recovery Center for Women.

Ann Taylor grand re-opening at Fayette Mall
Ann Taylor at Fayette Mall will celebrate its grand re-opening 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and a DJ.
During renovations, the Ann Taylor store moved to a temporary space in the former Verizon Wireless store in the Plaza at Fayette Mall near The Pub. The revamped store is now back at its original spot in the mall near the central play area.

Beauty experts at Macy’s on Saturday
Macy’s at Fayette Mall will host a beauty event at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. National beauty experts will take the stage to give you spring make-up and skincare tips followed by a Q&A.
Admission is $10 which includes breakfast and a goody bag valued at over $75. Enter the store starting at 8 a.m. at the Nicholasville Road entrance.

‘The Apprentice’ runner-up Kwame Jackson will be at Dillard’s on Saturday
Kwame Jackson (above), a finalist on the inaugural season of NBC’s “The Apprentice,” will be at Dillard’s at Fayette Mall 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday to introduce his Krimson by Kwame collection of hand-finished ties. Look for him in the Menswear Department on the first floor.

Cosmetics extravaganza
The cosmetics department at Macy’s at Fayette Mall will host a special event Saturday, March 28. Doors open at 8 a.m. for a stage show. Tickets are $15 in advance; a portion of the sales will go to the American Heart Association. Vendors from Estée Lauder, Clinique, Lancôme, Origins, Prescriptives and others will hand out cosmetics and demonstrate new spring merchandise. Breakfast will be provided, and everyone gets a goody bag with a free eyebrow wax from Ecotage Salon, a full-size Estée Lauder mascara and more. Aerie to open at Fayette Mall on Thursday
Just last week, Fayette Mall opened the newest location of the beauty megastore Sephora. Then on Thursday, July 17, the American Eagle spinoff Aerie will open its doors.
This is Kentucky’s first stand-alone Aerie, which, according to a press release, specializes in young women’s “intimates and dormwear,” whatever that is. The store is in the Dillard’s wing in the former Bombay Co. space.
To mark the opening, offers for free Aerie undies will be handed out while supplies last from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday and July 26. Now, tell me, how often can you go to the mall and score free underwear?
Aerie store hours are the same as the mall’s: 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday; and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. Call the store at (859) 245-5664.

While I grew up in small-town Kentucky I’ve always been fascinated with the cosmopolitan world of high fashion. On the other hand, I love a bargain and the thrill of shopping for just the right piece.
I have a degree in English from the University of Kentucky, and since 2002 I’ve written a column for the Lexington Herald-Leader about shopping, beauty and fashion. During that time I’ve interviewed everyone from designers to boutique owners about trends and style. And I’m still forever searching for the next big sale.
