We’re in the midst of holiday party season, and if there was ever a time to wear something sparkly or shiny, this is it. Just don’t overdo it: A hint of rhinestones or metallics will do the trick.
If you own vintage rhinestone pins or earrings, just hook one onto a bobby pin in backswept hair, and you have instant DIY-style chic.
And retailers offer plenty of affordable yet stylish options.
The Kohl’s Apt. 9 collection includes sleek wristlets (top photo, $32) in plum and pewter. Perfect for carrying gloss and a few other essentials for an evening of parties.
Accent a little black dress with a beaded trim wrap from Banana Republic for $79.50 (middle photo).
Versatile stretch belts from Loft come accented with jewels ($39.50) or chiffon floral appliques ($34.50, both shown in bottom photo).

While I grew up in small-town Kentucky I’ve always been fascinated with the cosmopolitan world of high fashion. On the other hand, I love a bargain and the thrill of shopping for just the right piece.
I have a degree in English from the University of Kentucky, and since 2002 I’ve written a column for the Lexington Herald-Leader about shopping, beauty and fashion. During that time I’ve interviewed everyone from designers to boutique owners about trends and style. And I’m still forever searching for the next big sale.
