Outlet mall worth fighting the crowds

A couple of weekends ago, some friends and I visited the just-opened Cincinnati Premium Outlets (it’s really in Monroe, Ohio, about half an hour north of Cincinnati off I-75).
There was the usual collection of outlet retailers, including J. Crew, Banana Republic, Nike and Tommy Hilfiger. But probably my favorite stop was the Saks Fifth Avenue Off Fifth store. Marni platform pumps and Tory Burch sandals were more than 50 percent off. The handbag department was tiny, but there was plenty of jewelry — both costume and high-end — and loads of designer sunglasses.
One beef we had with the trip was the crowds. Traffic was at a standstill in Monroe. Was it because of the Traders World Flea Market down the road? We couldn’t figure it out. And at the outlet center, a roped-off group of shoppers waited to enter the Coach store, and there was even a line to the building that housed the food court.
But it’s still worth the trip, especially for Saks.
Check out www.premiumoutlets.com, for directions and coupons, before you make the trip.

Harriett HendrenWhile I grew up in small-town Kentucky I’ve always been fascinated with the cosmopolitan world of high fashion. On the other hand, I love a bargain and the thrill of shopping for just the right piece. I have a degree in English from the University of Kentucky, and since 2002 I’ve written a column for the Lexington Herald-Leader about shopping, beauty and fashion. During that time I’ve interviewed everyone from designers to boutique owners about trends and style. And I’m still forever searching for the next big sale.
